Rwanda

As one of Africa’s smaller countries, Rwanda is ideal for a compact itinerary for nature lovers that like to avoid the crowds.

Trekking Mountain Gorillas, Golden Monkeys and Chimpanzees in the Volcanoes National Park are the highlight. But don't make the mistake of just popping into Rwanda for its primates. There is so much more to this country. Known as the Country of a Thousand Hills, it is the ideal destination for active travellers who like to hike and mountain bike. Bicycle rentals and back-up are all available. The Nyungwe National Park boasts incredible trails and a suspension bridge through the canopy of the rainforest. For a Big 5 safari, head to the Akagera Park, and Lake Kivu is perfect for a few days of relaxing before returning home.

Rwanda has a tumultuous past and a tour of the emotive Kigali Genocide Memorial cannot be missed. The men of Rwanda are great dancers and it is a treat to watch a performance of their traditional Dance of Heroes, or Intore.

Best time to travel: May - October
